A Steain Curriaye.—The Earl of Cait^jaess ' (Scotland) has built a carrige which is to be pro pelled by steam power upon ordinarj' turnpike roads. On a recent occasion he made a trial trip, and though, as the local papers say, the road was filled with horses and conveyances of all kinds, his lordship passed through them all without any more inconvenience to the general traffic or alarm to the horses than if he had been in bis carriage and four. So perfectly had he the whole moving power under his control, that he stopped more quickly than an ordinary carriage and horses could draw up, and this he did as often as he saw the least danger of any horse being frightened. He reached Beauly, a distance of fourteen miles, in an hour and twenty minutes, notwithstanding the frequent stoppages and fifteen minutes lost in getting water. This steam carriage has in front all the appear ance of an ordinary open carriage, which can be covered in when required. It is mounted on three wheels much after the fashion of a peram bulator, the front or guiding wheel being fitted on a pivot below the body of the carriage, so as to be turned by the steering handle in the direc tion required. The wheels are of small diame ter, and in width of rim are fully double those of ordinary carriages. The boiler and engine are behind, with a seat for the stoker, whose occupa tion is not much more cleanly than that of stokers in general. The boiler may contain from sixty to seventy gallons of water, and requires to be replenished every hour, or at about every ten miles distance, as the consumption of water is about a gallon per minute on an average. The engine is nine horse-power, and is so constructed that the boiler and engine together occupy a very small space, only about five feet or so of the length of the cairiage being thus taken up. The cost of the whole is about £200. The consump tion of coal is quite small, about eight pounds per mile. The fire is entirely concealcd from the view of an animal approaching in front, and the top of the smoke funnel only rises a little above the heads of those seated in the carriage, and is not by any means a source of terror to the coun try nags. Morinondom.—The Mormons have no present intention of leaving Salt Lake Valley. They are busy erecting in every settlement substantial buildings for council-houses, court-houses, meet ing-houses, and school-houses. Grist and saw mills, nail factories, foundries, and every kind of machine shop are becoming common. A few miles from the city Brigham is laying out a nursery, with a million trees, whicli he calculates will in ten years turn him in as many dollars. The building of the Great Temple has recommenced, and every spare team is hauling the massive rock from Cotton road into the city. Of the magnitude of this edifice our readers will form some notion from the fact that the foundation alone cost 860,000, and a contract has recently been concluded for the hauling of the rock for the basement story, a dis tance of ten miles, for $80,000. The building is to cover an area of 21,850 feet. Newark Daily Ado. An important question has just been laid to rest; it ought to be for the last time. This arose in a case in the Circuit Court before Judge Nelson, in which Capt. George N Hollins, Com mander ot the L'nited States sloop-of-war Cyane, is defendant. It was an aetion of trespass brought by the plan tiff to recover damages for the des truction of property by the defendant at San J uan del Norte, Nicaragua, otherwise called Grey- town, on the 13th July, 1854. Capt. Hollins pleaded obedience to the commands of his Govern ment, to which it was objected by the plaintiff that neither the President nor Secretary of the Navy had authority to give the orderfi there re lied on to the defendant, and hence that they af forded no ground of ju.stification. The Court ruled the plea of the defendant to be good on the principle settled in the case of Marbury and Madison. The question whether it was the du^y of the President to interpose for the protection of the citizens at Greytown against an irrei'ponsit)le and marauding community that had established itself there, was a public political question, in which the Government, as well as the citizens whose interests were involved, was concerned, and which belonged to the Executive to determine; and his decision was final and conclusive, and justified the defendant in the execution of his orders through the Secretary of the Navy. The verdict was, of course, for defendant. * Slavery in 1715.—The following ars some statistics of the old colonial days.
